in Kansas City.
Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue
13441 Holmes Rd
Kansas City, MO 64145
816-942-9141
Restaurant Description: Walk into the dimly lit and heavily decorated original
Fiorella's Jack Stack Barbecue in Martin City (south of Kansas City),
and you'll be immediately engulfed by the rich, savory smells of
perfectly prepared barbecue. Everything is prepared with great attention
to detail, and the atmosphere is friendly and family-like. Lest you
forget where the meat comes from, there are plenty of ceramic pigs and
cow heads covering the walls to remind you. The staff is incredibly
accommodating -- feel free to ask for watever substitutions will make
you happy, they don't mind at all.
Arthur Bryant's
1727 Brooklyn Ave
Kansas City, MO 64127
816-231-1123
Restaurant Description: What makes this simple restaurant legendary? The sauce.
Restaurant founder Arthur Bryant said, "I make it so you can put it on
bread and eat it." And you could, though many folks prefer to pour it on
some of Bryant's meat, which is slow smoked over hickory and oak wood.
The restaurant is loved most for its short ribs, which are tender, smoky
and just short of sublime. But no one complains about the sandwiches,
which are good and huge.
Plaza III Steakhouse
4749 Pennsylvania Ave
Kansas City, MO 64112
816-753-0000
Restaurant Description: When it comes to true Kansas City steak houses, most folks
agree that you can't do much better than Plaza III. And ''most folks''
means more than the locals -- the restaurant is recognized as one of the
top steak houses in the United States. Why the great reputation? The
Plaza III's staff selects the best USDA prime beef and ages it in a
specially designed cooler to enhance its tenderness and flavor. Steaks
are cooked to diners' exact specifications. Non-steak eaters might opt
for the lamb chops, lobster or chicken.
Grand Street Café
4740 Grand Ave
Kansas City, MO 64112
816-561-8000
Restaurant Description: If you think that the best restaurants on the Plaza are
actually "on" the Plaza, you're missing a gastronmic phenomonon known as
The Grand Street Cafe, just overlooking the Plaza on the other side of
Main Street. The crown jewel of the PB&J restaurant empire boasts that
its raw appetizer is the best Hawaiian Ahi Tuna Tartare in the country.
A courageous statement to make in landlocked Kansas City, but with the
tuna flown in fresh daily, Grand Street Cafe delivers on its promises.
Bristol Bar & Grill
5400 W 119th St
Leawood, KS 66209
913-663-5777
Restaurant Description: Back in the 1980s, the Bristol opened on the Plaza and put
seafood on KC's culinary map. Though the restaurant has moved south to
Leawood, it retains much of the detail that made it a success. The appetizer
menu contains some familiar dishes, including steamed mussels and baked
Maryland crab cakes. The hot drop biscuits are the same, and now they're
served with honey butter. And you can still get fresh, mesquite-grilled fish
and seafood.
Piropos
1 W 1st St
Parkville, MO 64152
816-741-3600
Restaurant Description: Since opening, Piropos has created quite a stir in Kansas City.
The restaurant sits atop one of the higher spots in beautiful Parkville and
offers sweeping vistas of the Missouri River bottoms -- both from inside the
restaurant and from the comfortable deck. No matter where you end up, you'll
be outfitted in elegance and treated to exceptional service.
The American Restaurant
25th and Grand
Kansas City, MO 64108
816-545-8000
Restaurant Description: For nearly 30 years, The American has been Kansas City's
premier fine dining restaurant -- on par with New York's best. It remains so
today. The decor and food are elegant, and the knowledgeable waitstaff
ensures diners have a flawless experience. The restaurant provides sweeping
views of Crown Center's courtyard, and the terrace is especially pretty in
winter, when it comes alive with hundreds of tiny white lights.

40 Sardines
11942 Roe Ave
Leawood, KS 66209
913-451-1040
Restaurant Description: Celebrated chefs Debbie Gold and Michael Smith create a playful
dining experience, but aren't kidding around when it comes to the haute,
contemporary cuisine at their Hawthorne Plaza restaurant, 40 Sardines. The
eatery is an energetic blend of the upscale and the urban; the decor is
sleek and open, sometimes even a little loud, but comfy and friendly, while
the menu maintains a sophisticated edge. The restaurant sure lives up to its
early hype.
Le Fou Frog
400 E. 5th St.
Kansas City, MO 64106
816-474-6060
Restaurant Description: Though the restaurant's name means "the crazy Frenchman," the
food here is certainly not "fou." In fact, Le Fou Frog is taken very
seriously by the crazy French owner and his patrons. If you're looking for
standard bistro fare, like bouillabaisse and cassoulet, you'll find it here.
The restaurant's real treasure is the lengthy and ever-changing list of
specials, which leans towards haute cuisine. The Frog is a great place for
fish (think swordfish brochette) or meat (steak au poivres).
Gates Bar-B-Q
3201 Main St
Kansas City, MO 64111
816-753-0828
Restaurant Description: There are plenty of places to eat good barbecue in Kansas City.
So why go to Gates? For starters, Gates is one of the legends of KC
barbecue. The first Gates restaurant opened in 1946 at 19th and Vine, when
the district was still a hoppin' jazz spot. The Gates empire has since grown
to six restaurants in the metro area. Part of that success has been Gates'
irresistible original sauce, which gives the slow-smoked beef, pork, chicken
and other comfort food a pleasing zip.
